Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No. Subnotes has no sign-up or password — it uses the iCloud account already signed into your device. Your notes and tasks sync privately between your own devices through your own iCloud, and nobody else (including us) can see them.
Is my data backed up?
On Mac, Subnotes automatically saves a local backup of all your notes to ~/Documents/Subnotes Backups every time your Mac wakes from sleep, keeping the 7 most recent. You can restore from one of these anytime via File → Restore from Backup…
On iPhone and iPad, backups are manual: from the Notes tab, use Export all notes to save everything as a single plain-text file (compatible with Markdown), which you can then store anywhere you like — Files, email, AirDrop, etc.
How does sync work between my devices?
Through your own private iCloud account via Apple's CloudKit — the same technology Apple's own apps use. There's no server run by us in between; see our Privacy Policy for details.
I found a bug, or have an idea for a feature
We'd love to hear it — email hello@subnotes.app with as much detail as you can (what you expected, what happened instead, and your device/OS version for bugs).
Still stuck?
Write to us directly and we'll get back to you.
